Malware
Viruses - Lysol wipes aren't going to help you here. Computer viruses can be transmitted between connected devices much like the way viruses are spread between people. The objective of the virus can range from destroying your system to giving cyber-criminals access to any infected devices.
Spyware - This type of intrusive malware generally is used to track your activity on the infected system. It can download itself without permission, open annoying advertisements, and steal your passwords.
Botnets - Bot, James Bot 001... Networks of computers under the malicious control of criminal puppeteers. Like puppets, these systems are controlled by a remote hand that give commands to carry out specific instructions (command and control).
Botnets will be launched against target networks in an attempt to steal data, send spam email, distribute malware, or deny service (DOS or DDOS attack).
Think of it like you if had an army of zombies you could send out to wreak havoc on your enemies... yes, that sounds really cool... but it's a very bad thing to do.
Ransomware = digital kidnapping. Essentially, this malware will encrypt ALL data on your computer and demand some form of payment to get it back.
Criminals will request some form of untraceable payment like crypto-currency (bitcoin).
Ransomware can spread rapidly between networked systems and quickly cripple a business. Be very vigilant about links and attachments in your email.
